They say copying is the sincerest form of flattery, and for Paris Hilton it certainly rings true. Back in 2000, the It-girl wore a slashed-to-the-navel silver Julien Macdonald chainmail dress to celebrate her 21st birthday in typically lavish style – and the new generation of rising stars just can’t seem to forget the iconic look.
Exhibit one: Dua Lipa slipped into a similar glittery custom Versace dress for her latest music video. Dropping the disco-themed track this week, she shared some behind-the-scenes snaps from the shoot for “Levitating”on Instagram. And the resemblance to PH’s birthday dress didn’t go unnoticed. “My birthday dress vibes! #iconicAF,” Hilton commented on the sultry photo.
Now, cast your mind back to 2016 when Kendall Jenner also took style notes from a younger Hilton, too. Heading to her 21st birthday party with the Kardashian-Jenner clan in tow, Jenner clearly paid homage to Hilton in a similar bias-cut-and-backless dress. She made sure the world knew it too, writing: “Paris Hilton vibes” on Instagram.
“Kendall, I was just at her birthday party the other night, and when I was saying hi to her I looked down at her dress and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that dress is stunning.’ That was actually my dress for my 21st birthday, as well. We were laughing about how the dresses look exactly alike and she looked stunning in it, it was such a beautiful dress. To see that re-created just brought back a lot of memories,” Hilton previously told Vogue of the moment. And what has become of the original outfit? “I actually still have that dress, it’s in my closet, so I think I’m going to pull it out one day.”
