The clip recorded by guide Zadri White at AndBeyond Phinda Animal Sanctuary is one of the rare footage of antelope fighting off the aggression of the cheetah.
On the way back home after a busy working day, the guide caught sight of cheetahs walking with small cubs, so he stopped to observe. Suddenly, the mother leopard sped, ran all the way across the road and disappeared into a thicket of grass by the roadside.
But just a few seconds later, the leopard returned with the trophy of a duiker in its mouth. The poor antelope did everything to struggle, fighting the ferocious predator.
At one point, the antelope almost escaped from the leopard’s grip, but the opportunity quickly passed.
White said: ‘It’s hard to put into words how I feel when I see this wildebeest crying, fighting for life. However, the leopard also deserves a meal that is enough to feed itself and its children.”
