Cubs Ride Strong Offensive Performance Past Phillies in Convincing Win.Yen

June 11, 2025 by mrs a

Mick Abel’s third MLB start proved challenging as the Philadelphia Phillies fell 8-4 to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The rookie pitcher surrendered three home runs to Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ, and Michael Busch, exiting after striking out Kyle Tucker in a bases-loaded fourth inning. Unlike his first two starts, where he pitched 11⅓ innings without a walk, Abel issued three walks.

Cubs' enviable offense beats up on Abel and Phillies' bullpen in loss
Alec Bohm’s two-run single briefly gave the Phillies the lead, but Happ’s two-run homer off Taijuan Walker in the sixth swung momentum back to the Cubs, who added three runs in the eighth. The Phillies, now 38-29, have struggled offensively, scoring over four runs just twice in their last 12 games, going 2-10. Without Bryce Harper, sidelined by a wrist injury, their offense lacks power and consistency.

Aaron Nola’s recovery took a hit with a stress reaction in his right rib, compounding his sprained ankle. “It is highly unlikely Nola will return before the All-Star break in mid-July,” per team updates, meaning Abel will remain in the rotation. Brandon Marsh also exited with left elbow soreness after a slide, halting his recent 5-for-7 hot streak.

The Cubs, second in MLB in runs per game, showcased their dynamic offense, ranking top five in homers, batting average, and steals. The Phillies face them again Wednesday at 1:05 p.m., aiming to clinch the series and season series, crucial for playoff seeding.

With the NL East race tight—four games behind the Mets and tied with the Giants for the top wild-card spot—the Phillies can’t afford to slip. Harper’s return remains uncertain, and offensive consistency is critical with 95 games left. Can they rebound? Stay tuned!
