Justin Bieber and his father have always had a tumultuous relationship.
The Canadian pop star was born on March 1, 1994. His parents, Pattie Mallete and Jeremy Bieber, were 18 when they welcomed him and Justin was not raised in a happy home. His parents called it quits on their relationship just a few months after he was born.
Jeremy was in and out of jail during Justin’s early life. In 1997, Jeremy was convicted of assault and sentence to 90 days in prison. He then spent another 21 days in jail after violating his probation. He got off the hook in 2004 when he was charged with assault, but the case was dismissed.

Pattie opened up about her relationship with Jeremy in her book, Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom. Even though Jeremy was scarcely in Justin’s life, he did his best to be there. He taught the Baby singer how to play the guitar. There was a point Jeremy and Pattie were engaged, but broke things off due to Jeremy’s infidelity. In Justin’s album, My World, he sang about being raised by his parents.
Justin made his music debut in 2009 when he released, One Time. His manager was Scooter Braun, but was mentored by none other than, Usher. Pattie always believed in Justin and was excited for his new future but just “didn’t know what to expect.” When she was signing documents for his future, she was “afraid” that her decision could bring Justin down to the wrong path of “unhealthy, long-term relationships.”
Pattie took accountability for signing contracts and for Justin hanging out the wrong crowd. She wrote: “At the end of the day, I was Justin’s mother. I was accountable for any documents for any documents I signed, or any deal I authorized… I was afraid of making a mistake. What if I signed something that steered Justin in the wrong direction, or put him in the path of unhealthy, long-term relationships? But I couldn’t allow those questions and fears to complicate things. God wouldn’t have put me in this situation to fail. I began to follow my instincts. I’m sure I made mistakes along the way, but what parent doesn’t?”
The Sorry singer was introduced to Diddy during that time and the two became good friends. Over the years, the pair have been seen partying together, collaborated in music and more. Videos have resurfaced showing the two hanging out after Diddy’s arrest, questioning Justin’s safety when he was only 15 years old. Diddy was recently arrested and charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has denied all allegations, pleaded not guilty and is currently awaiting trial on May 5, 2025.
In 2015, Justin admitted that his father was not around for a whole year when he was just four-years-old. He told Billboard that his father was “immature” and went to British Columbia that year, but did return on Father’s Day. He added: “I remember my mom said, ‘If you’re going to be here, you have to be here.’ There’s a misconception that he’s this deadbeat dad, but he has been in my life since. I was with him on weekends and Wednesdays.”
In some of Justin’s darkest years, Jeremy was present. Justin was arrested for drag racing in Miami, Florida in 2014, which Jeremy allegedly helped arrange. The day after Justin was released from custody on a $2,500 bond, he was spotted partying with his father. Jeremy was also there when his son was accused of smoking marijuana on a private flight and verbally abusing a flight attendant in 2015.
The father and son duo have worked on their relationship throughout the years. The two even have matching tattoos on their ribs. Justin has posted tribute posts on Jeremy’s birthday and has also been present to his dad’s four kids, Jazmyn, Allie, Bay and Jaxon. The singer attended his father’s wedding in 2018, while Jeremy was also there when he married Hailey Bieber in September 2018.
