Liam Payne tragically died on Wednesday night aged 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, following reports he was acting ‘erratic’
Liam Payne’s cause of death has been revealed after he tragically died after falling to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
The One Direction star died on the spot due to multiple injuries including a skull fracture after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Alberto Crescenti, the Buenos Aires emergency services chief, said medical teams weren’t able to save Liam when they arrived on the scene.
In a statement, Crescenti said: “Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life. Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”
Liam had been in the country for a concert performance by his former bandmate Niall Horan. Liam had spent days with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy in Argentina before she had returned home to the USA.
Police, firefighters and ambulances were seen outside of a hotel building after Liam tragically fell from the balcony. Police are said to have been called to the hotel following reports of a man acting “erratically” after his girlfriend had fled the trip alone.
Liam is said to have been seen in the hotel lobby just prior to his death reportedly smashing his laptop. Liam reportedly needed to be carried from the lobby to his hotel room.
A body was found in an internal patio of the hotel. It’s believed that Liam suffered “very serious injuries incompatible with life.” In a statement, the local ambulance manager told TN: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.
“There is an internal courtyard where the victim fell, with tables and chairs: the hotel’s confectionery shop operates there. The space has a retractable roof that was open at the time. Fortunately, there were no other people there.”
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding Liam’s death, according to Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system in Buenos Aires. The singer’s body has been sent for an autopsy.
It’s hoped the autopsy will help investigators determine what led to his death and if there were any contributing factors. It’s currently unclear if authorities suspect foul play in his death.
Crescenti said in a statement: “The alarm was raised at 5.04pm local time saying a person was lying in an internal patio at Casa Sur. At 5.11pm an ambulance arrived and the man was certified dead. Afterwards we found out he had been a famous singer. Unfortunately the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal. There was no possibility of resuscitating him.”
Liam’s death comes just days after his ex-fiancée Maya Henry had accused him of repeatedly contacting her. It’s been reported she had started legal proceedings against him.
Just days before Liam’s death, Maya’s lawyers issued a cease-and-desist letter to Liam on her behalf. Her legal team said in a statement: “Maya Henry issued a cease and desist last week to Liam Payne following the emergence of new and concerning information.”
The statement, which was shared with The Daily Mail, continued: “She has retained attorneys Marco Crawford and Daniel Cerna to represent her. At this time, that is her only comment on the matter.”
Liam was one fifth of hugely popular boyband One Direction and had also seen solo success following the band’s split. However, it’s reported that he struggled to adjust following the band going their separate ways.
Liam is survived by his son Bear, who he welcomed with Girls Aloud star ex Cheryl, his mom Karen Payne and his dad Geoff Payne.
Preliminary autopsy reveals Liam Payne’s cause of death
A preliminary autopsy has been done on Liam Payne a day after he died from a fall off a hotel balcony.
The autopsy points out that Liam died from “multiple traumas” and “internal and external bleeding.” A prior statement from the Buenos Aires emergency services chief, Alberto Crescenti, noted: “Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”
Before his fall, a hotel employee called emergency services and noted he was worried Liam might fall due to his alleged intoxicated state.
Liam Payne’s family issues statement over ‘heartbreaking’ news
A day after Liam’s death, his family issued a statement through his spokesperson.
“Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul,” it read, “We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
After news of his death broke, his parents Geoff and Karen Payne left their house “in a hurry.” When a family member opened the door to reporters, they said: “We’re obviously devastated at the news but we don’t want to comment.”
Fellow X Factor contestant Cher Lloyd shares condolences
Cher Lloyd, who was a contestant on X Factor in 2010 when One Direction was competing on the show, posted an Instagram tribute to Liam Payne.
She shared a black and white photo of her and Liam at the time on the site. “From being on the show together, visiting each others homes while filming, going on tour together and watching you achieve your dreams,” she captioned the post, “I’ll cherish the memories made and the laughs we had.”
Her post ended: “My thoughts are with your family and friends, with everyone who loves you. My heart is breaking for your Son Bear. Rest in peace Liam.”
Fans ‘ache’ thinking about Liam Payne’s band member suffering another loss
After the death of Liam Payne, social media has been filled with tributes and memories dedicated to the late singer.
Some fans of Liam are pointing out how hard this death must be for his ex-bandmate, Louis Tomlinson. “Not to make it about One Direction right now but I’m also thinking of Louis who was probably the closest one to him in recent years and has to experience another devastating loss. It f—–g aches to think about,” one fan wrote on X.
Louis lost his mother to cancer in 2016 and then his younger sister to an overdose in 2019. He has yet to comment publicly on the death of his former bandmate.

Self-declared Directioner Noah Cyrus shared a heartbreaking tribute to Liam Payne on her Instagram story.
“I’m not gonna ever be able to fully voice how I am feeling but I feel so fortunate to have been in the same generation as Liam Payne and the phenomenon of 1D,” she wrote, “Liam you are so loved and will always be loved by so many.”
She continued: “This is the most devastating, awful, heartbreaking news. I’m sending so much love to his family, girlfriend, and the close people around him.”
“As someone who eat sleep breathed One Direction and being a part of that fandom was such a huge part of my life and so many others,” the Lonely singer added, “We are so lucky to have been apart of that fandom.”
Noah emotionally added: “We are so lucky to have known Liam Payne the singer and performer. But my heart goes out to the Liam Payne who was suffering behind closed doors.
