*Warning: Major spoilers for Don’t Move ahead*
Netflix’s newest addition, Don’t Move, is a delight for fans of thrillers and horror.
However, many will be left trying to decipher the cryptic message in the film’s final scene. Released on October 25, this drama tells the story of a woman being chased by a serial killer.
She initially manages to escape, but soon discovers that he has injected her with a paralytic agent, leaving her with just twenty minutes to flee before her body completely shuts down. Yellowstone’s Kelsey Asbille stars as Iris, the victim, with Finn Wittrock playing Richard, the murderer, in this Netflix thriller.
In the climactic scene, Richard binds Iris and forces her onto a boat with the intention of driving out into the water to kill her. In a shocking turn of events, she lures him closer to her and stabs him. She then shoots him and throws him overboard.
The boat begins to sink due to the bullet holes, and Iris swims to shore despite her partial paralysis. Despite his severe injuries, Richard also manages to surface from the water, reports the Mirror.
As Iris watches him slowly die, she says: “Thank you.” But what exactly does she mean by that?
Let’s delve into the hidden meaning of this thriller. What is the hidden message of the film?
When we first meet Iris, she’s in bed, clearly distraught. She glances at a red toy boat that once belonged to her deceased son before getting up, grabbing a knife from her kitchen drawer, and driving to a cliff in the heart of the forest with the intention of jumping off.
However, Richard interrupts her just as she’s about to leap, providing viewers with a momentary sigh of relief. But the scene quickly takes a dark turn when Richard assaults her and binds her.
Iris, who initially wanted to end her life, is now forced to fight for it as she tries to escape the relentless killer. Through this intense game of cat and mouse, she discovers a renewed desire to live.
Iris utters “Thank you” upon realizing she doesn’t want to die. When they first encounter each other, Richard discloses that he lost his girlfriend Chloe in a car accident just a week before their university graduation.
He admits they were arguing prior to the crash and says: “I don’t want to tell you what my last words to her were.”
Iris later finds out that Richard’s final words to Chloe were “Thank you”. He confesses that witnessing Chloe’s death gave him a sense of clarity and made him feel godlike.
Richard’s murderous rampage began in the wake of Chloe’s demise, as he sought to replicate that potent sensation. He dissuades Iris from leaping off the cliff because he desires to be her executioner, to experience a god-like power.
When she finally breaks free, Iris gains a newfound appreciation for her life. Her harrowing encounter with Richard reignites her love for life, leading her to express gratitude towards him.
