Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett strongly criticizes Texas’ proposed congressional maps, calling them “racist” and warning they would drastically limit Black representation despite Texas having the largest Black population in the U.S.
In a fiery statement, Representative Jasmine Crockett has denounced Texas’ proposed congressional maps, describing them as “racist, period.”
Crockett emphasized that Texas is home to the largest Black population of any U.S. state, yet the proposed maps would leave Black communities with only two districts where they could effectively elect representatives of their choice.
“These maps are not only unfair — they are designed to silence Black voices,” Crockett declared. “My colleagues and I won’t stand by while they try to strip away our representation.”
The redistricting battle in Texas has drawn national attention, as civil rights groups argue that the maps undermine the Voting Rights Act by diluting the power of minority voters. Critics warn that the new boundaries would cement partisan advantages while suppressing communities of color.
Meanwhile, advocates are preparing to challenge the maps in court, pointing to demographic shifts that show rapid growth among Black and Latino populations in Texas.
As the debate intensifies, Crockett and fellow lawmakers vow to continue fighting against measures they say would erode democracy and perpetuate systemic inequality.
