Sheriff Says Prescription Pill Bottle Found Near Gene Hackman’s Wife Is ‘Key Evidence’ in Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, after a prescription pill bottle was discovered near Arakawa’s body. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza described the finding as “very important evidence” in determining the circumstances surrounding their passing.
In an interview on Today with Savannah Guthrie on February 28, Sheriff Mendoza was asked whether the medication, first mentioned in an affidavit for a search warrant obtained by PEOPLE, could be connected to the couple’s deaths.
“That’s obviously very important evidence at the scene,” Mendoza stated. “The medication was found open, with pills scattered nearby. That information was collected and passed to the medical investigator to assist in determining the cause of death. We’re also reviewing other medications that may have been present in the residence.”
Investigation and Autopsy Timeline
When asked about the timeline for toxicology reports, Mendoza explained that results could take up to three months or longer, depending on the laboratory’s workload. “We’re hoping to receive the results sooner rather than later so we can answer key questions and move forward with the investigation,” he added.
According to the affidavit, Hackman and Arakawa were found in different rooms of their home. Arakawa was discovered lying on her side in a bathroom, with a space heater near her body. A deceased German Shepherd was found about 10 to 15 feet away, while two other dogs on the property were in good health.
Authorities noted that both Hackman and Arakawa may have been deceased for some time before being discovered. Arakawa’s body showed signs of decomposition, with bloating in her face and mummification of her hands and feet. Hackman was found fully clothed in another room, with his sunglasses nearby, suggesting he may have suffered a fall.
Foul Play Not Suspected, But Not Ruled Out
While initial findings do not indicate foul play, Sheriff Mendoza emphasized that investigators are keeping an open mind. “Based on the lack of evidence suggesting foul play, we’re fairly confident that wasn’t a factor,” he said. “However, we are not ruling anything out. The autopsy results will be key in determining the official cause of death.”
Mendoza urged patience from the public and the couple’s family, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages. “This case is only a few days old. We’re piecing together a timeline and thoroughly examining all the evidence,” he said. “The autopsy is crucial, and it will take time. We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work to provide answers.”
